Emily Gordy Dolvin was born in Richland, Georgia in 1912. She grew up in Richland, about twenty miles east of Plains, Georgia, and graduated from high school in Columbus, Georgia in 1930. She became a school teacher until she married William Jasper Dolvin, who was a school principal and insurance agent. She helped her husband for years in the insurance office.
